No wedding rings at China-challenging factory

Touring the KORTEKS plant, where workers take off their wedding rings to prevent them from being caught in the spinning yarns, Zorlu said “For us there is no Chinese threat.”

Speaking at a meeting held to show off the KORTEKS weaving facility, which the Zorlu Textile Group is calling “Europe’s biggest techno-textile base”, Zorlu Holding President Ahmet Nazif Zorlu challenged China. Holding a press conference at a plant where employees avoid wearing rings, bracelets, and similar jewelry to avoid their catching in the spinning yarns, Zorlu noted that they were producing to the highest standards of quality. Saying “For us, there is no Chinese threat”, Zorlu added “China is a threat for the rest of the world. But we’re exporting to China, limited though those exports may be. The average age of the factories you see here is two years. These are factories unlike anything in Europe or elsewhere in the world.”

Textile Group increases employment

The Zorlu Textile Group has an annual production capacity of 600 million square meters of fabric of which 200 million square meters is curtains. Total employment in group companies has reached 10 thousand, up from the 7,372 people employed in 2000. KORTEKS General Manager Necat Altın noted that the plants were producing 50 million meters of lace, 5.755 million meters of guipure lace, and 7.035 million meters of embroidered fabric a year.
